THE BROUGHTON VILLAGE PLAYERS September 2023
BVP was formed in 1982 when, inspired by Marjorie Gowlett and others, several village residents produced an evening’s entertainment on 19th February in aid of the church. Since that time over forty productions have been staged and, although initially it was vaudeville orientated, in a short while BVP were performing two productions a year, including plays and pantomimes which all became very popular.
There are several constraints facing a director when deciding which play to perform. Thought needs to be given to the restricted area in the Village Hall where the performances are primarily staged, and that there are generally not enough young men involved to be able to perform many of the possible options. Despite this however, BVP has been able to find enough material to be able to provide a wide variety of entertainment for our patrons. Although BVP has had a great deal of success over the years judging by the box office, its members are currently feeling the effects of advancing years and a certain amount of arm twisting has to be done by the director to persuade some who would not otherwise have contemplated going on the boards, to try their hand. This is particularly true of pantomimes where the cast is generally large and many children are involved. The message we would send out, therefore, is that BVP always welcomes new members. These members do not necessarily have to “tread the boards”; stage construction and other back stage work is always required. However several people have moved from such work to acting and have been glad they have done so.
The present officers of the society are as follows:
Chairman Lesley Ashley
Treasurer John Francis
Secretary Robin Graham
Social Secretary Trisha Graham
Some of BVP’s recent productions include: Hansel and Gretel, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, Dad’s Army, The Vicar of Dibley, A Murder is Announced, First Things First. There are several people you can contact (see above) if you wish to discuss being a member. Or you can send an email to [email protected].
If you'd like to be kept informed of our future productions, please send an email to Robin Graham at that address.
